Your snippets and prompts, one keystroke away.
TextTray keeps the prompts and snippets you retype all day at your fingertips. Hit your hotkey, pick one, and it lands right where you're typing. No cloud, no accounts, no subscription.
macOS 15 or later · One-time purchase, no subscription
What it is
You have a handful of things you retype constantly — the prompt that finally got a good answer, the reply you send twice a week, the same block of boilerplate. They live scattered across notes, old chats, and memory.
TextTray gives them one home, a keystroke away from wherever you're already typing. It's a menu, not another app to switch to: pick an item and the text lands where your cursor is. No window to manage, nothing to sync, nothing to learn.
Core features
Single purpose, and deliberately small.
-
Fill in the blanks
Put
{{clipboard}}in a prompt and it's replaced with whatever you just copied — copy an error, hit the hotkey, and the finished prompt is built around it.{{date}},{{time}}, and{{timestamp}}work the same way. -
One keystroke, anywhere
Your hotkey brings the library to you, in whatever app you're using — it defaults to ⌘⇧C and you can rebind it. The first ten items get ⌘0–⌘9, and typing an item's name jumps straight to it.
-
Your database is a file
Your library is plain JSON on your own disk — no proprietary format, nothing locked away. Edit it in TextTray's built-in editor, or in Vim, or keep it in a git repo.
-
Stays organized as it grows
Sort related prompts into groups, and hover any item to read its full text before you pick it. Once the list gets long, the built-in editor filters as you type, with a live character and estimated token count.
-
Local by default
No account, no sign-in, no sync, no analytics, no telemetry. The only time TextTray talks to the network is when you click “Check for Updates” yourself.
How it works
Three steps, then it's muscle memory.
-
Copy something
An error message, a paragraph, a diff — or nothing at all, if the prompt doesn't need it.
-
Hit your hotkey
Your library opens right there, in whatever app you happen to be working in — no window to find, nothing to switch to.
-
Pick an item
It's copied and pasted at your cursor, with any placeholders already filled in.
Pricing
TextTray isn't on sale yet. Whatever the price lands at, this is how it will work.
- No subscription, ever
- No account to create
- Your library stays yours
